2 Steps To Creating Better Goals
Happy new year! It’s the New Year and that time again for new resolutions and goals. Theoretically, if one achieves these it’s because it’s something they want in their life or want to let go of.
But how do you know what you really want?
I know that there are many things now and in the past that I have “wanted to want” in my life like learning to play the guitar or becoming a composter or learning Tai Chi. But if I really wanted those things, why don’t I do anything to get them?
Here’s a great way to clarify how to create a goal for what you really want and or need right now in two steps.
Start with a feeling. How do want to feel? Do you want to be happier? More relaxed? Inspired? Take a moment to reflect on the feeling you want to bring more of into your life. When you have it, move onto the next step.
Once you have the feeling, ask yourself, “What is a small change I can make to create more of this feeling in my life?” Make sure that the change you are thinking of is reasonably achievable and is specific. Then start with that small step.
For example, “I want to feel more ease in my life.” So I would think of something that would create more ease for me. I decide to take two hours each Sunday to meal prep my daughter’s lunches for the week so I don’t have to do it on workdays. Boom, its specific (two hours on Sunday) and achievable.
If this new change doesn’t bring me more desired ease, then I will scrap it. Life is an ever-changing work in progress.
The point is to create small, achievable steps that bring in more of the feeling you want. The more of it you have the more motivated you will be to make more small changes. Cheers and Happy New Years!
